Are two movers enough for your move? If you’re comparing two-mover crews, crew size alone doesn’t tell you whether two people can complete the job efficiently. A lightly furnished two-bedroom apartment with easy access can be simpler to move than a packed one-bedroom with stairs, a long carry or bulky furniture.
The difference comes down to the amount of handling involved, how easily the crew can move between the home and truck, and how much time is available. Those details also help determine whether a two-person crew is practical or whether adding a third mover makes more sense.
Two movers are usually enough for a smaller, well-prepared move with straightforward access. A third mover may make more sense when inventory is heavier, stairs or long carries slow the work, or the move has a tight time window.
What Does a Two-Person Moving Crew Include?
A two-person moving crew handles the physical work involved in a typical local move, from carrying belongings out of the home to loading the truck and unloading at the destination.
Crew size is only one part of the service; the equipment, furniture handling, and any additional work should also be clear before you book.
What the Movers Handle
- For a typical local move, two movers can:
- Carry furniture and boxes from the home to the truck
- Load and secure belongings in the truck
- Transport the shipment to the destination
- Unload and carry items into the rooms you specify
- Complete basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, where included in the service
Packing is a separate consideration. If you won’t have everything packed before the crew arrives, ask whether packing services in Ottawa can be added to the booking.
What Equipment Comes With the Crew?
A moving crew needs more than a truck to handle furniture safely.
Depending on the service, equipment may include:
- Moving blankets
- Furniture and appliance dollies
- Straps
- Floor protection
- Equipment for standard furniture handling
Mover’s Tip: Ask what equipment is included before comparing hourly rates. Two companies can quote similar rates while offering different levels of equipment or service.
What May Cost Extra?
Some items or services require additional planning, labour or equipment.
These can include:
- Packing materials and packing services
- Pianos, safes and other specialty items
- Items requiring specialized equipment
- Appliance disconnection
Hoisting or other work outside normal loading and unloading
If your move includes an unusual item or a service beyond basic loading and unloading, mention it when requesting your estimate.
Knowing about it before moving day gives the company a chance to plan the appropriate crew, equipment and time.
What Can Two Movers Move in a Day?
As much as the inventory, access and preparation allow.
A packed one-bedroom on the ground floor with parking at the door may be a morning’s work.
Put the same apartment on a third floor with no elevator, and the carrying distance can increase dramatically. Every box now has to travel the stairs instead of a short hallway. The inventory didn’t change. The work did.
Add a storage locker nobody mentioned, and it stretches again.
Lockers, home offices and garages are where the unaccounted hours sit, and none of them appear in a bedroom count. If your move involves a studio, one-bedroom apartment, a few rooms or selected furniture, our small moving services in Ottawa page covers the types of smaller moves we handle.
What You Can Control Before the Movers Arrive
How ready the place is.
Sealed boxes and clear hallways mean the crew spends the day carrying.
Half-packed rooms and a bed still assembled mean they spend part of it finishing work you’d assumed was done.
What Should You Ask Before Choosing Two Movers?
Not how many bedrooms two movers can handle.
Ask how far each item has to travel, how much there is to move, and how much will be ready when the truck arrives.
When Are Two Movers Not Enough?
A two-person crew may not be the best fit when the move involves more inventory than the bedroom count suggests, access that slows every trip, or a deadline that can’t move.
| If this applies | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Full basement, garage or storage locker | Adds inventory that may not be reflected in the bedroom count |
| Appliances, safes, upright pianos, oversized sectionals | May require additional planning, equipment or labour |
| Stairs, or a long carry from the truck to the door | Adds carrying time to each trip |
| Booked elevator window or a possession deadline | Leaves less flexibility if the move takes longer |
If several of these conditions apply, a three-person crew may make more sense. If you’re moving a larger household, our guide to how many movers you need for a 3- or 4-bedroom home explains how crew size changes with inventory, stairs, access and truck requirements.
Why a Third Mover Can Cost Less
A larger crew may cost more per hour but can sometimes finish the work in fewer hours. Whether that lowers the total depends on how much time the additional mover saves.
A third mover can make the biggest difference when stairs, long carries, or heavy, awkward items slow the work down.
Two movers may still be the better fit when the load is light, access is straightforward, and the truck can park close.
Ask for the estimated hours with each crew option and compare the total labour cost. For current crew rates and a broader look at how moving time affects the final price, see our guide to Ottawa moving rates and crew costs.

How to Compare Two-Mover Quotes Fairly
Two moving quotes can show similar hourly rates but still produce different final costs.
Compare what each estimate includes and how much labour time the company expects the move to require.
Before choosing a two-mover service, check:
- Crew and truck: How many movers are included, and is the truck part of the quoted rate?
- Labour time: How many hours does the company estimate, and what minimum booking applies?
- Travel: Is travel charged separately, included in the estimate or billed as part of the moving time?
- Equipment and services: Which moving equipment is included? Are packing, specialty items or other additional services priced separately?
- Estimate terms: What does the written estimate cover, and what circumstances could change the final amount?
Two questions are particularly useful:
When does the labour clock start and stop?
What could cause the final cost to change?
Ontario Consumer Note: Moving-service contracts worth more than $50 must generally be in writing. If the contract includes an estimate, the mover generally cannot charge more than 10% above that estimate unless you agree to additional or different services or to a revised price.
A lower hourly rate does not automatically mean a lower total. Compare the estimated hours and total labour cost for each crew option.
What Should You Tell the Moving Company Before Booking?
A quote is only as accurate as the information behind it.
An address and a bedroom count don’t show the full workload. A storage locker, a walk-up, or a long hallway can change the labour involved even if the home size stays the same.
| What to share | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Inventory — major furniture, rough box count, basement, garage and locker contents | Shows how much needs to be carried, loaded and unloaded |
| Access — floors, stairs, elevator, loading dock, distance from truck to door | Helps the crew account for carrying distance and access restrictions |
| Specialty items — pianos, safes, appliances, oversized furniture | May require additional planning, equipment or labour |
| Preparation — packed and ready, or packing and disassembly required | Changes how much work the crew needs to complete on moving day |
| Timing — moving date, elevator booking, fixed possession window | Helps determine whether the planned crew and labour time fit the available window |
The more complete the information, the more useful the estimate. It gives the moving company a better basis for recommending the crew size and estimating the labour time.
Mover’s Insight: Don’t describe the move only by saying “it’s a one-bedroom.” Mention what is actually being moved and how the crew will reach it. A storage locker, long hallway, walk-up stairs or large sectional can change the labour involved even when the home size stays the same.
Is a Two-Mover Crew Right for Your Move?
Most moves fall somewhere between the two columns. One factor alone does not automatically mean you need three movers.
A single flight of stairs on an otherwise light one-bedroom may still be manageable with two.
Two movers are usually a good fit when the inventory is light to moderate, access is straightforward, parking is close, boxes are packed and ready, and there is no tight elevator or possession deadline.
Consider three movers when the inventory is heavier than the bedroom count suggests, stairs or long carries slow the work, the move includes bulky or heavy items, access windows are limited, or you need to reduce total labour time.
